Over $3,500,000 of the minimum

The consecration of the Rev.
Dr. Burleson, Editorial Secretary
and Editor of the Spirit of Mis-
sions, as missionary bishop of
South Dakota, took place in the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
New York City, on December
14th. The new bishop was born
in Minnesota, where his father was
a pioneer mission any and was
educated in the west, spending
part of his time on an Indian res-
ervation. He took his theological
course at the General Seminary,
New York, and has since that time
been engaged in work both east
and west. As one who knows the
Indian well and who has lived for
a large portion of his life under
western conditions, Bishop Bur-

CHURCH PENSION FUND
For ten months, Rt. Rey. Wil-
liam Lawrence has devoted hisen-
t : re time, energy and best thought
to provide pensions for aged cler-
ay, clergymen’s widows and their
children— a worthy cause, an equi-
table cause, and a cause which
must appeal to every one.
The Church cannot be a leader
in pensions as many are now pro-
The first gift made to the new
Bishop off South Dakota for the
needs of his district was $10, which
was made through the Rev, John
A. Staunton by the Igorots of the
Philippine Islands for the work
among th;e Indians of South Da-
kota. How wonderful an example
of unity in the Faith when the ab-
origines of. our new posssessions
send Christian greeting and loving
aims to the aborigines of the old!
A missionary in South Dakota
who for seven years has been do-
ing successful pioneer work over
a large territory, writes the fol-
lowing true words: “There are big
opportunities for the Church, if
only the clergymen can be secur-
ed to take advantage of them. It
is not an easy life. It offers almost
constant travel, the opportunity to
sleep in any kind of place and eat
any kind of food that men may be
able to secure; but it offers him
also an opportunity for hard, self-
denying service, the kind of ser-
vice which must be performed be-
fore the Church can be established
anywhere; the kind of service
which has laid the foundation for
all our Church work out here in
the west. And it is work which
counts, too. We make it possible
for the Church to come into her
own in these new towns, and for
men to learn about her and that
for which she stands.”
tion leaves upon those who attend
it and upon the Church at large,
there is always to be considered
its affect upon the community
where it is held. St. Louis is
certainly not more impressionable
and probably not more callous than
the average large city of our land.
The effect of this gathering of our
Church Upon public opinion there
is rather strikingly expressed in
the following from the editorial
page of the St. Louis Republic:
“The Bishops, deacons and laymen
of the great General Convention
of the Episcopal Church have gone
from us — but the savor of their
presence remains.”
“It has been good for us to en-
tertain them. In the hurry of our
ancl for things
with the using,
solicitude oyer
possessions which moth
and rust corrupt, and which thieves
steal, it has been good for us, even
if we came no nearer, to brush
sleeves in the street car with men
who had traveled hundred and
thousands of miles to inquire of
each other whether the worship of
God might not he made more fit-
ting and more uplifting, whether
service of praise might become
more articulate bv the use of re-
cent utterances of devotion and as-
piration, whether the light was
breaking on the souls of men in
distant lands, whether the training
of children and the marshalling of
the activities of their fathers and
mothers might be better ordered
in view of their immortality,
whether cities and nations might
he brought nearer to the City of
God.
“We have had men with us
who endure, as seeing

sufferings, We have been remind-
ed of unseen things which are

The small returns from the
town residents are . more
than needed for than need-
ed for the town improve-
ments, so it is quite a puzzle
to know how we can work it out.
W e are now trying to interest the
people themselves, and are suc-
ceeding somewhat; we hear they
are forming some society 7 to help.
At the present time we have work
for two more nurses arid if we
could get them, the town would
put up another little house which
is badly needed for maternity
cases, and we would use our pre-
sent one for the little babies. 55

an established sisterhood of the

sisters have been appointed and
are to work in connection with the

of which the Rev.. Robert E, Wood
is rector. All these sisters go out
from St. John’s House, Arlington

to the religious life and to good
works are looking toward the mis-
